The Trouble With You

The new single from Dave Orban & the Mojo Gypsies

Released Sep 3, 2021

Our latest single, “The Trouble With You”, represents a bit of a sonic departure for the band. Written and arranged by guitarist Dave Orban, this is a moody, atmospheric piece about how even the most solid of relationships and expectations can change over time. In addition to writing and arranging the song, Orban played and recorded all instruments – guitars (including a 9-string guitar!), bass, keys, vocals, and drum programming – augmented by Mike Scott’s terrific tenor sax solos. Mike’s smoky, haunting sax weaves in and out of the piece, evoking classic film noir from the 40s and 50s, and complementing perfectly the melancholic resignation of the lyrics.

“I’m listening to a lot of jazz these days, and wanted to try to write an old-school ballad,” he added. “In looking to approach this differently from what I might normally do, I decided to write it on piano instead of guitar, to push myself a bit in terms of both the overall song structure and the chord voicings.”

“I’ve also had to teach myself the ins-and-outs of recording and mixing in my little home studio… and I learned that the more I know, the less I know!  In any event, I’m pretty pleased with the end result. Hope you will be, too!”

While the global pandemic took away most of our gigs over the last 18 months, it also left a lot of extra time for songwriting. We’re busily working on refining and arranging them in advance of actually recording them, and will hopefully be able to put out some more singles in the not-too-distant future.

As always, thanks for your support, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing you “live and in person” in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime, stay safe!
